Why Your Child Believes What They Do?

August 31, 2018

Have you ever wondered about why you or your child believes the things they believe? There are actually several reasons. It is said that each of our lives is the sum total of the influence of our upbringing as a child, the people we hang around with, the books we read, and the music we listen to.

If you’ve been concerned about how your child’s belief system, take a good look at the group of friends they hang out with. It really is true; you become what you hang around with.

You may ask yourself, “Is there something I can do to turn things around in my child’s life?” or “Is it too late to make a real change in the direction they’re heading?” Thankfully, there are some things you can do. And, it really is never too late to make some type of change. However, the longer someone waits to make some changes, the more difficult it may be and the less effective and long lasting the changes will be.

It is fascinating to see how even some of the simplest changes can make a difference.

The first thing to do (either for you or for your child) is to take an honest look at all the influencers in their life. Again, the influencers are those listed above (i.e., friends, books, music, etc.). How are these influencers affecting their life? Looking into the future, do these influencers have a positive or negative effect on your child reaching their goals. These goals, obviously, include education, career or vocation, family relationships, etc.

Take a good, hard look at each of these. And keep in mind that this involves a lot of self-examination, as well. That means we cannot let our own selfishness to blind us from doing what is best for our children.

One of the biggest influencers we’ll encounter is the friends and other people our children hang around with. Our tendency is to behave like, dress like, and talk like these folks as well as have similar habits. If you don’t like the habits your children are beginning, take action…immediately! The sooner you nip this in the bud, the better.

Take regular notice of the things your children are reading and listening to. If the books and music they consume do not reflect the character you want for your children, something has to change. Again, this should be handled immediately.

At Lighthouse, the teachings of Jesus are forefront in all we do. Consequently, the things we read and the music we listen to should reflect the things Jesus taught. Don’t underestimate the effect this will have on you and your children.

We are certain that the positive steps you take early on can and will produce the outcome you desire.
