It is an age old tradition. Every year either before or within a few days after the first of January, folks all over the world make the annual declaration of their "New Year Resolutions". Apparently (and hopefully) an assessment was made of life experience from the past twelve months and a determination was made that life would be better if one or more changes were made. This week is the week of Christmas. It happens to be the season of the year when more people give gifts than at any other time of the year. After all, God loved us so much that He gave His son Jesus. He truly is the supreme model of all gift-givers. That no doubt should be a goal for all of us. So it is no surprise that we choose this week to study this whole idea of giving. It really is a gift! You have probably experienced this in the past or maybe even today. In the first chapter of his letter to the church at Philippi, the apostle Paul wrote "...And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns." What powerful words of encouragement for those of us who at what time or another may have struggled against disappointment or fear as we pondered giving up on something!
